What does this Quote mean? Any Ideas?

“A King’s lot: to do good and be damned”

I read this quote in the much revered Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, Emperor of Rome and Philosopher; but it was not said by him, only quoted. It was said by Antisthenes; a philosopher and pupil of Socrates, it says Antisthenes said this in something or somewhere called Caizzi. I thought the quote could be talking about the responsibility of a Monarch, where they do good but are still dissliked, maybe? What does everybody else thinks it means?

It means that rulership is often a thankless task.
