Best way of recording a Guided Meditation CD using a computer and affordable software?

I am interested in recording a Guided Meditation CD using my laptop computer. I’d be grateful for advice of how best to do this, including what hardware (such as external microphone) and software (shareware or affordable commercial software) to use, with a view to keeping it simple enough but obtaining a fairly professional-sounding product. The kind of Guided Meditation that I have in mind would mostly be based on voice (i.e. recorded speech), with relatively minimal intermixing (or post-mixing) of occasional background sounds and/or music. I’m not at all experienced with the technical facets of all this, so I will very much appreciate any advice that you have to offer. In offering your advice, though, please do assume that I’m an idiot. Thank you so much!

I used a free program called Audacity ~ http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/ & turned them into MP3s.
