That influence others. Pink Floyd, you hear the electronic concentration. (1970) The Dream tangerine?

I do not think Floyd really influential in. TD. Innovators from them when electronic music is still new. Pink Floyd and more guitar-driven blues band, but. TD effort to expand the use of synthesizers. This relatively new and still pretty limited on that.

Rubycon $5.89 Tangerine Dream's 1975 album picks up where 1974's Phaedra left off--with sequenced teases of palpitating synth under ambient washes of cosmic sound and traces of melody. If Phaedra was the marsh of dank electronic washes and eerie sounds in the night, Rubycon is that marsh just before dawn, awakening in a dusky light of bubbling metallic sequences and murky movements of lush synth. There's plenty... |

Stratosfear $5.45 Consisting of four parts, Stratosphere reworked the Tangerine Dream trademark sound--a heady mix of electric guitar, drum, and assorted other electronic instruments--into a form more readily available to those new to the genre than their previous works. A rich blend of racing sequences, dramatic chord structures, and a stranger-than-strange bluesy treatment of a track called "3 am at the Border of... |

The Electronic Magic of Tangerine Dream $21.98 With Tangerine Dream's recorded output spread across close to 40 years of work, and a variety of record labels as well, a comprehensive overview of their output would be a behemoth of a box set. This two-disc collection of odds and rarities cannot even begin to approach those proportions, but still its journey hits many of the high points that one would hope to find, as it traces band mainstay Edgar Froese at least into the early 1990s. The set opens with a pair of cuts recorded by Froese's pre-Tangs band the Ones in 1967, a couple of darkly atmospheric psych rockers that are far removed from anything he would go on to create. These are followed by brutal live takes on the two-part "Ultima Thule" that marked the Tangs' debut single, but which highlight the new band's personal direction by borrowing much from period Pink Floyd. From there on in, however, Electronic Magic perfectly matches its title, as a clutch of lengthy synth pieces sweeps through the speakers, echoing but rarely repeating the textures and melodies that hallmarked the band's studio output. This is especially true on the early to mid-'70s material, when Tangerine Dream were at their contemplative peak; but even after moving into the '80s, from whence the bulk of disc two is drawn, there is a strength and purpose here that confirms the group's continued importance and influence. ~ Dave Thompson, Rovi |

Tournado: Tangerine Dream Live $5.97 Further evidence that Tangerine Dream had entered a new phase in the '90s: a live tour that actually showcased songs from their then-current catalog. Tournado is the second set (intact with no overdubs) of an April 23 concert in Zabrze, Poland, delivered as part of their 1997 Eurotour. Augmented by guitarist Zlatko Perica and percussionist Emil Hachfield (who starts things off on the uncredited opening track), Edgar and Jerome Froese run through selections from their studio albums, beginning with Rockoon. The sound and sonic detail is typically outstanding, and in many cases these live versions have more energy and presence than the originals. Far from the meditative atmosphere one would find at an early Tangerine Dream concert, Tournado nearly defies the listener to sit still by mixing energizing melodies with contagious club rhythms. Different versions of the popular "220 Volt" and "Lamb With Radar Eyes" are highlights from the concert, although there isn't a weak link in the chain. Edgar and Jerome Froese weave their electronic magic, Hachfield's electronic drums are a vast improvement over synthetic drum patterns, and Perica gets in some excellent guitar solos on cuts like "Firetongues." With its crisp sound and brisk pacing, Tournado functions as a fine overview of Tangerine Dream's work. If listeners haven't purchased any of their work from the '90s, this might be the best place to start. Judging by the music on this disc, Tangerine Dream puts on a great show. ~ Dave Connolly, All Music Guide |

Tangerine $12.98 This is supposed to be the album on which David Mead "moves beyond his singer/songwriter roots," but if that expansion has happened it's not immediately clear from the music. Granted, he and producer Brad Jones use some interesting sonic effects (some of them electrical, as opposed to electronic) and bring in strings and complex vocal overdubbing in several places, but Tangerine still manages to feel pretty much like the work of a talented guy with a piano and an acoustic guitar. And more power to him. Mead's is some of the most consistently attractive, melodically pleasing, and intellectually rewarding pop music around, and it would really be a shame if he "moved beyond" his most obvious strengths anytime soon. The title track is an enjoyable but ultimately rather slight instrumental with wordless vocals, and it opens the album; after that, things get more interesting quickly. On "The Trouble with Henry," the subtle beauty of the production is as important as the words and the melody; on "Reminded #1," multi-layered voices are supported only by gorgeously arranged pizzicato strings, and with "Fighting for Your Life" Mead moves completely into Beatles territory, with stunning results. "Hallelujah, I Was Wrong" is rootsy R&B and "Suddenly, a Summer Night" prominently features the theremin, which is always nice. "Sugar on the Knees" wins the Weirdest Lyrics of the Album Award, and yet it's almost impossible not to sing along. Few records this immediately attractive are still so interesting after repeated listens. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, RoviPerformers: Jim Hoke - Autoharp, Flute, Penny Whistle, Saxophone; Lindsay Jamieson - Cowbell, Percussion, Trap Kit; Chris Carmichael - Strings, Viola, Violin; David Henry - Cello, Strings; Keith Brogdon - Drums, Trap Kit; Brad Jones - Bass, Calliope, Fender Rhodes, Guitar (Bass), Harmonium, Organ (Hammond), Piano (Grand), Theremin, Vocals (Background); David Mead - Bass, Bass (Electric), Clavinet, Fender Rhodes, Glockenspiel, Guitar, Guitar (Classical), Guitar (Electric), Hi String Guitar, Mandolin, Mellotron, Piano (Grand), Toy Piano, Ukulele, Vibraphone, Vocals |
