Help to Find the Best Meditation Music And Achieve An Ultra Deep Meditative State

Although you don’t have to use specially recorded meditation music – anything that relaxes you will work for meditation – there are benefits to using meditation tracks that have been recorded with the sole purpose of sending you into a meditative state. OK, some tracks are just “new age” music – maybe pipes playing or keyboard music swirling around you – but there are also a number of music pieces that have been recorded with the sole purpose of helping you relax and go deep into meditation.

Some sites that sell meditation music will allow you to sample the tracks before you buy. Amazon is a good example of this, as are some of the sites dedicated to selling meditation music.

That said, first impressions aren’t always the best. A track that is “immediate” could get boring over a period of time. You’ll likely remember this from various pop songs over the years – the ones that you like on first hearing start to pale on the second listen and after three or four times just get filed and never played again. Other tracks that you weren’t sure about initially go on to be your favorites in a few weeks or months. Just keep this in mind when you’re listening to online samples.

Also remember that the purpose of meditation music is to help you to meditate. Which may sound obvious but it’s something that gets forgotten from time to time. When you listen to an online sample, you’re not actually about to meditate. Try to put yourself in the right “place” if you use this method to decide on a track or CD to purchase.

Another option is to get yourself a dedicated meditation track that uses extra “tricks” such as binaural beats to enhance your meditation experience. This will work with you on several levels and will almost certainly be the best choice for your meditation music. Look for binaural beats or other brainwave entrainment methods if you think they will work for you – it’s certainly the method I use on a daily basis for my meditation sessions.

It could be contended that the title to this compilation is misleading, for it consists not of music specifically composed and/or recorded for yoga and meditation, but of music from the Vanguard catalog that might lend itself to those activities. Oregon are the most heavily represented of the four artists, with 8 of the 14 tracks; the rest are older 1960s recordings of guitarists Peter Walker and John Fahey, and oud player Hamza El Din. The common ground? Well, all of them were combining folk music and world music to some extent, though Oregon were far more jazz in their orientation, and far more aligned with the sounds that would come to be classified as new age. Disregarding the yoga/meditation marketing flag of convenience under which all of the tracks have been assembled, this is pretty good music for serene, introspective moods, whether you engage in yoga and meditation or not. El Din, Walker, and Fahey have a more earthy, exotic edge, and draw more from non-Western traditions than Oregon do, which makes this in some ways less than the most comfortable match; it might have been better to make one volume all Oregon, and the other a comp of the three string players. Overall, however, it’s considerably superior to much of the purer new age music used for yoga and meditation exercises, or simply for new age listening. With a title and front cover like this, one would expect 1968′s Music for Yoga Meditation and Other Joys to have come out on an obscure San Francisco label run out of the back room of a natural foods store and feature amateurish players no one had ever heard of before or since. Yet, this duet album between clarinetist Tony Scott — a former hard bop player in the ’50s who had become drawn into world music and a style that can only be called proto-ambient — and sitar player Collin Walcott is actually not just a lifestyle curio, but a musically interesting lifestyle curio. Strip away the Age of Aquarius trappings (although the liner notes are good for an ironic giggle) and Music for Yoga Meditation and Other Joys is not dissimilar to what Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders would get up to over the next decade: long, flowing melodies and one-chord drones colored by elements of Indian classical music and other world music influences.
