Tranquility: Music for Yoga and Meditation $16.98 It could be contended that the title to this compilation is misleading, for it consists not of music specifically composed and/or recorded for yoga and meditation, but of music from the Vanguard catalog that might lend itself to those activities. Oregon are the most heavily represented of the four artists, with 8 of the 14 tracks; the rest are older 1960s recordings of guitarists Peter Walker and John Fahey, and oud player Hamza El Din. The common ground? Well, all of them were combining folk music and world music to some extent, though Oregon were far more jazz in their orientation, and far more aligned with the sounds that would come to be classified as new age. Disregarding the yoga/meditation marketing flag of convenience under which all of the tracks have been assembled, this is pretty good music for serene, introspective moods, whether you engage in yoga and meditation or not. El Din, Walker, and Fahey have a more earthy, exotic edge, and draw more from non-Western traditions than Oregon do, which makes this in some ways less than the most comfortable match; it might have been better to make one volume all Oregon, and the other a comp of the three string players. Overall, however, it’s considerably superior to much of the purer new age music used for yoga and meditation exercises, or simply for new age listening. The Walker and Fahey recordings, incidentally, were all done with accompanying musicians, not as solo pieces, though all of these are low-key and placid in mood. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: Hamza el Din – Oud; Mark Andes – Bass (Electric); David Earle Johnson – Conga; Bruce Langhorne – Bells, Tambourine; Paul McCandless – Clarinet (Bass), Horn (English), Oboe; Ralph Towner – French Horn, Guitar, Guitar (12 String), Guitar (Classical), Mellophonium, Piano; Matt Andes – Guitar; Monte Dunn – Guitar; John Fahey – Guitar; Larry Karush – Piano; |

Music for Yoga Meditation and Other Joys $11.98 With a title and front cover like this, one would expect 1968′s Music for Yoga Meditation and Other Joys to have come out on an obscure San Francisco label run out of the back room of a natural foods store and feature amateurish players no one had ever heard of before or since. Yet, this duet album between clarinetist Tony Scott — a former hard bop player in the ’50s who had become drawn into world music and a style that can only be called proto-ambient — and sitar player Collin Walcott is actually not just a lifestyle curio, but a musically interesting lifestyle curio. Strip away the Age of Aquarius trappings (although the liner notes are good for an ironic giggle) and Music for Yoga Meditation and Other Joys is not dissimilar to what Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders would get up to over the next decade: long, flowing melodies and one-chord drones colored by elements of Indian classical music and other world music influences. The nine tracks explore a surprising variety of moods and tonalities given the self-limiting instrument lineup, and though this is too twee and hippie-ish to be called jazz, ambient and space rock fans will be fascinated by it. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music GuidePerformers: Collin Walcott – Sitar; Tony Scott – Clarinet |

Yoga Chill: Global Sounds for Yoga and Meditation $14.43 The compilation Yoga Chill announces its purpose in its subtitle, “Global Sounds for Yoga and Meditation.” Sean Dinsmore of the Dum Dum Project recalls in his liner notes his first yoga class and in particular the varied music he heard at it. He and his associates attempt to re-create that effect here, using the first disc’s 12 selections to provide rhythmic accompaniment to yoga exercises that listeners also will find conform to electronica and trance styles. The second disc contains two “guided musical meditations,” one in English and one in Spanish, with more ambient music and instructions in relaxation and spiritual awakening that may be taken as inspiring or a little pretentious, depending on one’s level of devotion. Nevertheless, the whole provides alternately stirring and soothing background music of an exotic nature. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music GuidePerformers: Badal Roy – Tabla; Niraj Chag – Vocals (Background); Sean Dinsmore – Vocals (Background); Aisha Ahmad – Vocals; Asha Puthli – Vocals |

For Yoga $7.98 Decca’s simply titled For Yoga presents 14 gentle, but not soporific, classical pieces ideal for a yoga session lasting just over an hour. The collection includes many well-known pieces that are lovely but not too languid, such as Satie’s Gymnopédies Nos. 1 & 3, Massenet’s Meditation from Thaïs, Debussy’s Reverie, and Saint-Saëns’ Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals. Bach, Vivaldi, Ravel, and Gluck are among the other composers represented on the album. Even though the For Yoga title makes the collection seem ultra-specific, the album’s relaxing, sophisticated music lends itself to a number of possibilities. ~ Heather Phares, All Music GuidePerformers: Raymond Leppard – Harpsichord; Marie Goosens – Harp; Heinz Holliger – Oboe; Julian Lloyd Webber – Cello; Jascha Silberstein – Cello; Eduardo Fernandez – Guitar; Christer Thorvaldsson – Violin |

Music for Zen Meditation $17.98 The shakuhachi is an ancient Japanese flute built from a single stalk of mandake bamboo. Introduced into Japan from China in the eighth century, the instrument has been used as a spiritual and meditation instrument since at least the 15th century. Music for Zen Meditation features solo shakuhachi performances from Riley Lee, the first non-Japanese dai shihan, or grand master of the instrument. It is a spare, contemplative recording that is well suited for any kind of relaxation. Unlike many albums intended to enhance yoga or meditation, this release doesn’t muddy up its performances with melodramatic nature sounds or new age synthesizer clichés. Rather, it contains two discs of unadorned shakuhachi performances. As a wind instrument, the shakuhachi flute is deceptively simple. It has no keys, pads, levers, or reeds like most Western flutes, and includes only five finger holes. But masters of the instrument draw expressive, evocative variations of sound that are at once relaxing and captivating. Lee turns in performances like this throughout Music for Zen Meditation. Accompanied only by his own breathing, Lee draws forth wistful melodies that seem drenched in morning dew. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide |

Music for Yoga, Vol. 1 $16.98 Some album titles are so stereotypical that the listener knows exactly what type of music to expect. If an album title contains the words “thug” or “ho,” it’s probably gangsta rap. If a title refers to “cheatin’ hearts” or “achin’, breakin’ hearts,” it’s probably country. And if a title has a reference to yoga, meditation, or relaxation, it may very well be new age. As its title indicates, Music for Yoga, Vol. 1 is a new age album that producer/composer Kevin Kendle recorded with a yoga session in mind. This instrumental CD contains a 61-minute piece of music that is broken down into four parts — “Sunlight,” “Stars,” “Still Air,” and “Returning” — and those four parts are interchangeable. Music for Yoga, Vol. 1 makes a point of being repetitious; after the listener has heard the first few minutes of Music for Yoga, Vol. 1, he/she has pretty much heard it all. Once Kendle establishes a groove — an ethereal, calm, tranquil groove with a slight Asian influence — he stays with it for an hour. Those who aren’t heavily into this type of new age may find Music for Yoga, Vol. 1 one-dimensional, but then, faulting this CD for being repetitious and predictable misses the point. Music for Yoga, Vol. 1 is all about mood and ambience, and since the album was meant to be yoga-friendly, Kendle’s goal was to maintain a peaceful ambience. However, one doesn’t have to be into yoga to appreciate this release; Kendle’s albums are typically aimed at anyone who just wants to unplug and decompress, and not everyone who fits that description practices yoga. Although not one of the more challenging new age releases of 2002, Music for Yoga, Vol. 1 is a pleasant disc that accomplishes what it sets out to accomplish. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide |
