Do you think that $20 monthly membership is high for a Zen Center?

I use to play chess in Dallas, big club, and the only yearly membership fee was $60. Now why would I have to pay $240 yearly to sit(zazen) in a Zen Center? I find this excessive do you? Also that Zen Center is in Dallas with apparently a lot of members so don’t tell me it is all going in utilities. . I was under the impression that Zen Center were following the Buddha tradition without seeking for money or materialistic goods & values. I guess I will stay home with my meditation Bench

Only in America do we have this very strange notion that we shouldn’t need to support the Dharma. This doesn’t exist in traditional Buddhist countries, where the standard “religious tithe” in America of 10% of your income is seen as insultingly little.

Why do you think it’s fair that other people should pay to support your access to the dharma, a teacher, teachings, and a reliable place to practice? When we are children, our parents see to our needs, but part of growing up is learning to be responsible on our own.

If you honestly cannot afford $20 a month to support the availability of the dharma and a place to practice it (and this takes a lot of serious introspection – it’s hard to imagine an adult who does not have less than a dollar a day to support something so deeply important to them) – what did the Zen center say when you explained your situation to them? You DID approach them about this didn’t you, and offer to perhaps exchange labor for membership? Or see if some generous member would be willing to play mommy or daddy for you and cover your costs?
